GSU Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach John Niendorf was very pleased with his teams performance last weekend in Michigan.
"We, as a coaching staff, are so proud of these young men and women today for what they accomplished yesterday at Great Lakes. The women's side featured 17 of the top 25 ranked teams in the country or those receiving votes to be ranked. The women's team averaged a program best 19:05 5k, beating the previous year's record by a minute. Sophia Flowers and Krysta Stanko each ran 18:16, destroying their 5k pr's this season and shattering the previous GSU 5k record. Avery Kittl and Morgan Pieczynski each ran 19:29 and 19:42 respectively. Yahaira Rodriguez and Camila Mendez each broke 20 for the first time in their careers, running 19:44 and 19:54."
"Despite missing some key runners on the guy's side, they were still able to average a school record 25:53 for the 8k distance as a team. Daniel Zavala and Samuel Rocio lead the pack with a 25:19 and 25:21 8k finish. Colin O'Brien finished with a 25:35. Branden DeLeon ran a 26:30. A couple new additions this year, Ian French and Parker Griffin, stepped up big time for us running 26:41 and 26:45. Chris Sacayon, a guy that was usually in the 17s and 18s in high school finally broke 27 in the 8k. There were so many other big pr's throughout the day in all the races and we couldn't be prouder of what all that those runners achieved yesterday for themselves. More importantly, it is amazing to see so many athletes that thought collegiate running wasn't for them, pursue their dreams and hit times they never thought were possible when they started. This is a fun group to coach, and they deserve all the credit for their success," said Coach Niendorf.
